Changi Airport to Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore

With a vision to become a research-intensive global institution and a leader in the field of technology and design, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) aims to nurture top designers and integrate their potential into a multi-disciplinary learning environment founded on the core values of integrity, creativity and passion.

Passion that Designs

SUTD provides education that is centered upon a unique academic structure that can be referred to as the Freshmore and Pillar Terms and can be seen as a structure that focuses on step-by-step enhancement of the students’ potential. With curriculum that is seen to be within the expanse of engineering programmes as well as technology-based courses such as the Information Systems Technology and Design, it can be seen that what was commonly conceived to be a mere passion for design is now placed within the context of technological advancement. To say that the institution nurtures an individual for a global platform would not be a stretch, as design and innovation is what fundamentally underlies the country’s progress in infrastructure.

A Step Towards Urbanisation

While we perceive Singapore as a first-class metropolis, the city never sleeps when it comes to continuous urbanisation. SUTD feeds into this mission with the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) which serves as a research centre that seeks to stimulate thinking and research on the critical issues of cities and urbanisation and explore the integrated use of technology, design and policy to provide urban solutions.

The Centre has also recently announced its upcoming collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information, a project award that seeks to study emerging issues in digital societies and ultimately assist in the country’s transition into an inclusive digital society. This 18-month research project will bring together multiple perspectives and research practices (a unity in diversity approach) from various fields in humanities such as psychology and anthropology, as well as engineering. Overall, the project will essentially be carried out on a holistic foundation, thus personifying the ideal that nation-wide urbanisation cannot be done without the myriad of disciplines that drive human progress.
